IntroductionThe movement of people from a certain socioeconomic status is known as migration. Migrant refers to a person who moves or migrates and is used to express the difference between them and naturally born citizens. In a cosmopolitan nation, the citizen evolves as a foreigner who starts from the "other" to define his own intercultural identity. Through immigration, the migrant, from the perception of the receiving country, is seen as the "Other" compared to the citizens of that nation. The host nation does so in an attempt to defend its statehood. On the other hand, citizens victimize migrants in reaction to the difference they have. For the migrant, who at this point is gradually transforming into a much easier to communicate “Other”, sees the hard work to obtain citizenship as a way out (Tottier & Arsenault, 2011, 56). In this essay I have chosen to compare and contrast the two cases of literature before Levy, “Small Island”; and “A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers” by Xiaolu Guo. Important to note is that Levy, an English writer who traces her origins to the islands of Jamaica. Her parents sailed to England where she was born (Levy, 2010, 15). On the other hand, Xiaolu was born in China. She has become a respected author with her novels written in many languages. Small Island brings to light two families, the first Jamaican and the second English. The clash between these two families from divergent socioeconomic backgrounds comes into focus. A concise Chinese-English dictionary for lovers brings to light how East meets West (Guo, 2008, 25). A Chinese English Dictionary for Lovers The author begins her book by apologizing for her E...... middle of paper ....... So society finds a balance between the change of new immigrants and existing citizenship . British society is open to exploring the vast culture of which its empire once consisted, and novels such as A Little Island and the English-Chinese Dictionary of Consciousness help fulfill this vision. In both stories we see the culture shock that migrants have to deal with as they try to settle in a new country. You are also able to learn about different cultures and therefore be better prepared should an opportunity arise to transition from one sociocultural society to another. Works Cited Guo, X. (2008).
