Information was collected on fast food's contribution to communities through the lenses of obesity, wages, waste, benefits and community relations. While there may be negative aspects to the fast food industry, fast food restaurants benefit the community in some way.1. Fast food and obesity America is the fattest country in the world and it is getting fatter. Obesity is the second leading cause of death after deaths caused by smoking. In 1991, 1 in 8 adults was obese; in 1999, 1 in 5 adults was obese, which shows how America is becoming increasingly obese. In 1991, only four states had obesity prevalence rates between 15 and 19 percent, and no states had rates at or above 20 percent. On the other hand, in 2004, 7 states had a prevalence between 15 and 19%; an overwhelming number of 33 states had prevalence rates between 20 and 24%, and 9 states had prevalence rates above 25%. The U.S. Surgeon General says 61% of Americans are significantly overweight, up from 55% in the 1990s and 46% in the 1970s.
