Everyone in America has their own American dream. These dreams can range from having a family or becoming a wealthy businessman. The American Dream was strongest in our country in the early 1920s. America was just beginning to triumph over poverty. People were becoming more successful as a country. Carrie Latet once said, “May I never wake up from the American dream.” Along with Carrie, this was the desire of the vast majority of Americans. In 1929, the Great Depression hit and many Americans had to wake up from their dream of success. The Great Gatsby, a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerlad, is set during the Roaring Twenties. The main character of this novel was a man named Jay Gatsby. Fitzgerald used Gatsby's life as a microcosm of 1920s America. Like most of America, Gatsby had a dream. His dream was to become part of the wealthy class of society. This dream of Gatsby was realistic. Whenever a person dreams a dream, he can always achieve it if he achieves it in the correct way. However, Gatsby did not fulfill his dream in the right way. He became rich, but this made him lonely. Because of his wealth, he was unable to say who his real friends were. People pretended to be friends with Gatsby just to get invited to his extravagant parties. From the outside it seems that Gatsby has achieved his dream. If you look closer, you will realize that he did not truly achieve his dream. If a person realizes their dream, but is not satisfied with it, I don't think that counts as realizing a dream. Growing up Gatsby was poor. Since he was a child he dreamed of being part of the wealthy class. Young Gatsby swore to himself that one day he would be rich. S...... middle of paper ...... there was an explosion in the morale of this great country in the Roaring Twenties. Geraldine Ferraro's statement, “If you take advantage of all that America has to offer, there is nothing you can 'not accomplish,'” is a vague but applicable description of Gatsby's dream. He wanted to take advantage of everything there was in this great country, because he had been denied it his entire life. The Americans wanted the same. Before the end of the First World War it was all for one and one for all, but in the 1920s it seemed like it was all for me and none for you. We all have our dreams, whether rich, famous, owning a business or having a family, Gatsby had his dreams and we have ours. Sometimes, when we want something so badly, we forget who we are, the morals and values we were raised on. This happened to the American people in the 1920s and to Jay Gatsby.
