In the words of my entrepreneur father, "being stuck in a program is like being trapped in a hellish labyrinth." Depending on a specific person, a scheduled routine may be appreciated, however it is not for all people. People rely on schedules to meet their priorities for the day, like actors follow a script. Society presents the problem of becoming a puppet to a programmed routine in an individual's life. This topic raises great controversy about the irony of the program controlling people, rather than the people controlling the program. Stephen Covey says, “The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to plan your priorities” (Brainy). Workers are so worried about their work and scheduled routine, that they lose their priorities. These priorities concern love and relationships, family, friends and quality of life. In the films Office Space and Visioneers, work is depicted as an inevitable part of life. However, the films do not present a strong argument regarding the negative effects that work has on workers in relation to their schedules and routines, which can lead to depression and stress. Office Space is a film that illustrates the fear of the workplace through its characters. Peter Gibbons, the main character, despises the working system and is fed up with his bosses. He follows a daily schedule that involves the same routines that are; wake up early, get stuck in traffic, get hassled by bosses, go home, watch television and repeat. Schedules control the lives of individuals, rather than individuals controlling the schedule. Repeatedly following the program is unhealthy and can cause depression (Gomez 1). Depression causes people stress, sadness…half of paper…time, but it also consumes a person's desire to dream. The workplace uses scapegoats to force a worker to feel and believe a certain way. Stay in control of the program and don't become a helpless accomplice. Works Cited “Effects of Controlling Work Schedules and Work Schedules on Employees.” Kubo, T. Ebsco Presenter.
