Topic > Scientific Technicians and Handling Chemicals

Handling Chemicals Chemicals are always handled with care. They should always be handled with care to avoid accidents. CLEAPSS provides technicians with standards that dictate what to wear when handling a chemical depending on the strength of the chemical. This is to minimize the possibility of accidents occurring. They also advise technicians on which equipment to use and how to transport chemicals safely and efficiently. This ensures that technicians are protected from potential risks arising from handling chemicals and ensures that chemicals are transported safely and efficiently. These procedures change in the presence of radioactive sources. The regulations come from the RPA, then they go to the Derby council who will analyze these regulations and may add some to improve safety, then they reach the School and they have to follow these regulations and sometimes add their own to prevent possible accidents. After this process the RPA representative for the school must complete a training course on the new regulations so that they can advise the school on the school's radioactive sources. The science technicians and, especially, the senior science technician must communicate with the other technicians and teachers so that they are all aware of who is handling and moving the chemicals at any given time. This consistency is important so that everything can be completed quickly and efficiently. Additionally, the senior technician will report what is happening to the science manager so that he/she knows what chemicals are currently being used. The senior scientific technician and RPA representative must also advise the other scientific technicians on what they should wear when handling a specific… paper medium… the chemicals in it can damage the pipes of the sink. All scientific technicians shared responsibility for all cleaning, cleaning and washing operations, but if they are not carried out in a workmanlike manner, the senior technician is held responsible. The senior scientific technician informs the scientific technicians what needs to be cleaned and how it needs to be cleaned depending on the chemical because different chemicals need to be cleaned differently, then the senior scientific technician will make sure the other scientific technicians are aware of its implications and that they take this into account when carrying out all these tasks together. Additionally, once cleaning, cleaning or dishwashing is completed, the senior science technician is notified so that he or she is aware that the job has been completed allowing him or her to focus on another thing he or she may need to do.
