In Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, set in Verona, Italy, Juliet's happiness is put on hold due to her parents' authority and the lack of control their children had in sixteenth century. John W. Draper's piece “Shakespeare's Star-Crossed Lovers” also supports my view of how Juliet's life is controlled by her parents. Juliet is a thirteen-year-old Capulet whose family is in a lifelong feud with the family of her love interest, Romeo, a Montague. In act three, scene five, Juliet is forced to face a dilemma. His parents arranged for him to attend the Country Paris wedding. They told Juliet that she will get married on Thursday. “I won't get married yet; and when I do, I swear it will be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris” said Juliet to Lady Capulet (her mother). What her parents didn't know was that she was already secretly married to Romeo. In his bedroom they discuss marriage. The Capulets do not allow her to live her life as she wants. It's as if they live through her or for her. His opinion and happiness don't seem to mean anything to his family. They are forcing her to marry a man for whom she has no affection. She claims to love Romeo. Whether it's real or not, we'll never know, but if that's what she wants and it will make her happy, I think they should back off on their daughter and let her live her life. If he makes a mistake, it would be considered his mistake and his bad luck. NOT his parents. Draper explains how Juliet feels about her and Romeo's fate in being together. “However, a tragic fate looms over the play…its 'diving soul' sees Romeo 'like a dead man at the bottom of a tomb.' He described his case as “past hope, past cure, past help,” Draper says. It also explains in more detail how Juliet feels about being put in this situation. It explains in depth how Juliet feels she has no control over her life in this sixteenth century lifestyle. Although in Juliet's decision since it is actually her life, but considering the circumstances she was stuck in by the horrible fate her parents were controlling. Just think that if Juliet's parents had only listened to her and not pushed her, maybe Romeo and Juliet's lives could have been spared.
