The Day After Tomorrow is a popular science fiction film released in 2004. The film tells the story of a paleoclimatologist who uses a paleoclimate computer model to predict that continued warming will result global in the arrest of the thermohaline circulation and, subsequently, in a rapid global cooling. He warns others of the consequences if global emissions and consumption rates do not decrease, but his warnings are ignored, his predictions come true, and extreme natural disaster events begin to strike around the world. The film depicts extreme weather events over a short period of time presumably due to climate change. The film portrays the world's rapid decline into a period of ice age, caused by the sudden collapse of the ocean's thermohaline circulation. Although the Hollywood blockbuster contains some accurate depictions of possible weather disasters related to climate change, many convincing cinematic depictions of weather and climate-related events appear to be quite inaccurate by scientific and geological standards. Geological SignificanceDespite the controversy created by the film's numerous inaccuracies and exaggerations, The Day After Tomorrow does possess some geological significance. As exaggerated as it may be, it has created a lasting impact on the general population around the world by increasing general awareness of the possible consequences of human-caused global warming. Dissemination and dramatization of the scientific issue has successfully promoted awareness, although not necessarily understanding, of global warming issues. Upon the film's release, many scientists expressed hope that increased attention to the topic would lead to progressive discussions about global warming. In fact,...... half of the document ......n of the physical law (Maters). Many of these events would realistically never happen so quickly or have such extreme consequences, unlike what was dramatically depicted in The Day After Tomorrow. Conclusion Despite The Day After Tomorrow's convincing use of special effects and film technology, the film has little scientific credibility in relation to extreme weather events and global warming. The depiction of a sudden ice age and instantaneous shutdown of the thermohaline circulation is far-reaching and almost impossible. Overall, the film gives viewers a distorted interpretation of the effects of global warming. The plot of the blockbuster film features mostly inaccurate scientific data and, at best, diluted and exaggerated climatological ideas used for entertainment purposes, dramatic effect and perhaps to create awareness of modern global warming problems..
