The book “1984” written by George Orwell shows the life of an average person in a totalitarian state. The book explains the problems and dangers of a totalitarian government (Big Brother) that maintains control and holds power over people. In order for a totalitarian government, especially in this novel, to maintain control over its citizens, it must get into everyone's heads by "brainwashing" them. Big Brother managed to achieve this by manipulating the English language, rewriting world history, and constantly reminding everyone that the government is watching them. Language allows people to freely express what they think and feel. However, free speech is something that Big Brother despises. If there is freedom of speech anyone can express what they think about the government. In the novel, George Orwell shows how Big Brother invents “Newspeak,” a watered-down version of the English language. When Syme was talking to Winston he stated: “Don't you see that the whole purpose of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? Ultimately we will make thought crime literally impossible, because there will be no words with which to express it." Pg.49 The main purpose of Newspeak is for no one to be able to conceptualize or question the power of Big Brother. Another statement Syme made to Winston is "By 2050, sooner, probably – all true knowledge of oldspeak will have disappeared. The entire literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron – will only exist in Newspeak versions, not simply transformed into something different, but actually transformed into something contradictory to what they were before.” Pg.50 Changing the English language is like mind control because now no one will have physics..... . half of the paper ...... osests are against them If the person has no one to trust except the government, it is no wonder why Big Brother had influence on the minds of their citizens Big Brother has complete control over the minds of their citizens, they must just continue doing what they are doing. When the language is forcibly changed, the people cannot express themselves, history has been rewritten, the people can only trust the government and a. where to turn for answers. When someone is always under surveillance by the government, people will feel like they are doing something wrong, which produces anxiety with all these control tactics The brother used is why they have such control over a population. If Big Brother didn't control a population in this way, then they wouldn't be in power because the citizens would know that what they were doing was inhumane and rebellions would overwhelm them..
