Activists; who are they? People who support or oppose a cause or issue. They are individuals who fight and defend their points of view, protecting and defending what they believe is right. These supporters convince and gather many supporters for their cause. Sometimes, they can successfully make their case, causing events to go the way they want. Other times, however, things don't go right and you end up losing. Similar to activists, Sammy, the protagonist of John Updike's short story “A & P,” stands his ground for what he believes is moral, only to later face disappointment. On a scorching hot summer day, Sammy, a teenage clerk at an A&P grocery store, is working the register when three women his age walk in barefoot, dressed only in bathing suits, to purchase herring snacks. Sammy allows women to continue shopping, judging them on appearance like average teenagers. However, all this ends when Lengel, the elderly and stern store manager, notices the three customers and feels that they are not dressed appropriately.....
