If someone diagnosed with a mental illness is arrested, they must be evaluated by a psychiatrist to determine their mental competency. Additionally, anyone arrested and suspected of having a mental illness should be evaluated by a psychiatrist. If the psychiatrist diagnoses the person with a serious mental illness (such as schizophrenia or bipolar), which can cause a person to hear, see, or believe things that are not real, then that person should be sent to a treatment facility, such as Pathways in the book.
