Topic > The Importance of Diversity in Television - 1074

Hurst's book discusses in chapter 8 that "whiteness is invisible to most white people", this may be a reason why there isn't much diversity in Hollywood , but there may also be racism and discrimination against people of different ethnicities (Hurst, 183). According to Hurst, racism is “embedded in structure and institutions, and defining racism individualistically rather than in structural terms has allowed our attention to be diverted from white privilege” (Hurst, 184). White privilege is present in Hollywood, everything is run by white people, and it is the white writers and directors, who decided who to cast in the show or film. Racial and ethnic diversity in television programming should not be a problem in the 21st century, it is a problem of the past and should not continue to exist. The NPR article discusses moving more series with "non-white actors and a more non-white cast, but that's still on 30% of all TV shows" which is a major improvement but there's still a need for something more.
