Volleyball, although not a contact sport, injures many athletes in a unique way. Volleyball-related injuries are most commonly referred to as acute (traumatic) or cumulative (overuse) injuries. Acute injuries, also known as traumatic, can occur as the effect of a sudden force on a body part which could unfortunately affect an athlete's overall play. Cumulative injuries develop over time due to strain on muscles, joints and other tissues without adequate rest time to allow the injury to heal. The longer these lesions are ignored, the more deleterious the condition will become. Injuries also reduce time spent in recreational activities, lower fitness levels as they can also degrade competitive performance. Injuries are one thing that can completely ruin the careers of many professional volleyball players. There are some guidelines for improving oneself and preventing injuries, as these can be drastically reduced if athletes take actions to take better care of their bodies.
