The doctor-patient relationship is one of many debates and changes over the years. The reason why it is so questionable is that many people have different opinions about what this actual relationship should be like and how certain situations can cause questions in this relationship. Such questions could be: do I really want my doctor to make decisions for me, or do I know my body best, why shouldn't I be able to make these decisions on my own, perhaps a mixture of both. In any case, this topic can be debatable as to how doctors and patients should manage these relationships. There are two models, in particular, out of four that have been considered the models that doctors and patients should take inspiration from. These two main models are the interpretive model and the deliberative model. The first model is the interpretive model, which in the doctor-patient relationship occurs when a doctor reveals all the medical information to the patient, thus helps to discover the patient's values. and desire, and finally the doctor advises the patient to make a decision based on what is medically available and what the patient has as values and desires. In the article “Four Patterns of the Doctor-Patient Relationship,” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, and Linda L. Emanuel, MD, PhD, which is an article that points to four patterns of the patient-physician relationship, and describes these models, also discussing which model is best, the authors state that this model is like the information model which is when a doctor provides all the information to the patient and lets him decide what is best, except that the doctor assists the patient on taking a decision based on your values and desires. The authors go on to say that this model is based on the fact that the patient's values... in the center of the paper... so if you lean in one direction they might simply tell you how they feel and go in the direction you prefer, don't argue until change your mind. To summarize, the doctor-patient relationship is complicated. Many different outcomes of a case can result from the way a doctor acts in it. Saying one model is better than the other is really based on the patient's personal preferences. I believe the deliberative model is the better model, however, just because I think this way doesn't mean someone else doesn't think the interpretive model is better.
