Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is an Arabic word and translates as purification or growth. It is generally considered a tax, as the taxpayer is expected to give 2.5% of their wealth to charity. However, Zakat is valued not for the money donated, but for the reason behind it. The intentions for giving Zakat should be purely and simply aimed at pleasing Allah and earning good deeds. The reason we are obliged to pay it is that everything belongs to God and that wealth is simply loaned to us by Allah and we should take care of it and use it well. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a portion for those in need. Furthermore, paying Zakat increases our self-esteem as we know we have performed an act of humility. A reference from the Quran states: "You will not gain mercy until you give what is dear to you." This means that you are a humble servant of Allah only if you share your wealth with others.
