Michael LaurenceEnglish 11B Rough Draft March 219, 2014Nuclear Energy is a Better Alternative EnergyNuclear energy is a growing source of energy for most of the world with many advantages. People doubt the importance of nuclear energy due to an accident. Because of this accident, the world has only seen the flaws of nuclear energy and not the many benefits it has to offer. Nuclear energy would benefit the world over if people would let go of the past and look to the future. Nuclear energy is a better alternative energy due to its economic and environmental benefits. Nuclear energy has grown to represent a large percentage of the world's energy. As of January 18, 2013, 437 nuclear power plants with a net installed electrical capacity of approximately 372 GW are in operation in 31 countries, and 68 plants with an installed capacity of 65 GW are under construction in 15 countries. At the end of 2011, total electricity production since 1951 amounted to 69,760 billion kWh. The cumulative operational experience amounted to 15,15,080 years by the end of 2012. (European Nuclear Society) The change that nuclear energy has brought to the world has brought benefits in today's use of energy. There are also many developing countries that are looking at nuclear energy because of all the benefits that nuclear energy has to offer. Between sixteen and thirty nuclear power plants are currently being built in developing countries such as China and India. Both of these countries are moving towards nuclear energy for many reasons such as its reliability and the amount of energy it produces. It is very advantageous because it only requires a small amount of space to build one of these nuclear power plants and the amount of energy they produce is significant. Both of these countries are looking at h......middle of paper......and the water begins to boil and steam is produced. As the steam is produced it is moved towards the opening of the reactor, as the steam rises it passes through the spinning turbines creating energy. The turbines start moving and that's what produces the energy. A lot of steam is produced during this process, which is why so much energy is created. What nuclear energy has the ability to do is get a lot of energy in a small amount of space. “About 1.6 billion people live without access to electricity and 2.4 billion rely on traditional biomass because they lack access to modern fuels.” (Dr. General Mohamed ElBaradei) With nuclear energy put into these countries that are without electricity, we can get to a point where electricity will be accessible to everyone. By making power accessible to all we can accomplish so much more and unlock more possibilities in our world today.
