A Good Night's Sleep by Brian McCabeA Good Night's Sleep was written by Brian McCabe and first appeared in "In a Dark Room with a Stranger". It is a story written to inform or remind the reader of the very serious problem that affects all major cities: homelessness. Brian McCabe does this through a normal guy who lives in one of those bigger cities I referenced earlier. In A Good Night's Sleep George Lockhart is this guy. George Lockhart is a Communication and General Studies teacher; he is recently divorced, because he has to try not to think about Elaine, his ex-wife, and with Elaine he has a son called Ben, who stays with George on weekends. Lockhart is also an insomniac; I don't know if there's a deeper reason for this, other than why he's awake in the middle of the night. Edinburgh, Scotland is the largest city where this story takes place; more precisely the story takes place in Lockhart's bed in his flat in Edinburgh, and right outside his flat door. This is not the ideal environment to draw a conclusion. One thing we can see is that it is a middle class apartment because there is a late night bar downstairs and it cannot be very isolated or "soundproof", otherwise this late night bar will not it would disturb neither him nor the neighbor sometimes. The fact that Lockhart is a teacher only strengthens this accusation. Then there's the girl; she is a little girl but has already been living on the streets for some time, she probably ran away from home. She was staying in a hostel but they no longer let her in, the reason is not clear, but since then she has been sleeping on the stairs and, apparently, on the doormats. Living on the streets most likely heavily influences a person's personality, and I think it made this girl more defensive, I understand this from her first reaction when George offers her a bed for the night, i.e. "no way!" Maybe once she accepted the offer and someone did something to her, rape might be a possibility. Throughout the story he is contemptuous and hostile. Once and only once she speaks without hostility but with kindness, this is when there is a door between them and she wishes him goodnight, before I said she is defensive, and in this situation there is a door between them which he defends her, so he doesn't have to.
