INTERNET CENSORSHIP.Today, Internet censorship is increasing in the world. The freedom to simply send emails or watch breaking news on the Internet may soon be controlled by the government. Millions of people around the world are engaged in a bitter debate over whether Internet censorship is right or wrong. Obviously this is wrong. The government has no right to exercise control over the Internet. The Internet was created to provide a platform where information could be published and accessed freely by all without regulation. It is in our best interest that the Internet remains free from government control. While Internet censorship helps the government prevent the spread of information that could incite violence, it also gives rise to dictatorship. An apt example of dictatorship resulting from Internet censorship is the current situation in China. According to research conducted by Reporters Without Borders in 2003, the Chinese government has full control of the Internet in China. In fact they developed a firewall called The Great Firewall of China. This software restricts access to certain websites such as Wikileaks and You Tube that expose corruption, police brutality and similar acts. Chinese citizens have been denied freedom of access to the Internet. Their government allows them to see only what is considered safe and appropriate. This is a violation of the right to freely access information. People, not the government, should have the right to choose what they see on the Internet. As a result, government control of the Internet often leads to invasion of Internet users' privacy. Can the government read your emails? Apparently it can. Most governments monitor the emails of unsuspecting users with... means of paper... a good reason to censor the Internet, but there are simpler ways to solve this problem without involving the government. There are parental control programs such as Web Watcher and Pc Pandora that can be used to prevent access to this information. These programs require a password to access any age-restricted websites. These programs not only prevent children from accessing adult content on the Internet, but also ensure the freedom to access the Internet without government control. In short, private regulation of the Internet is more attractive than government control. All in all, government Internet censorship is somewhat useful, but it is undemocratic and unnecessary. It has no place in a democratic society. The internet has provided many with the freedom to access and publish information, let's keep it that way.
