People must trust a hero. In a conversation with Jem, Miss Maudie says, “Did it ever occur to you that Judge Taylor appointing Atticus to defend that dog was no accident? That Judge Taylor might have his own reasons for appointing him?” (pg.289) Miss Maudie is wondering why Judge Taylor assigned Atticus Tom Robinson's case. The reader realizes that the reason for this is Atticus's integrity. Judge Taylor knew that Atticus would accept the tough task while respecting the Constitution and giving Tom Robinson a "...fair trial...". With the community against him, Judge Taylor knew that Atticus would remain strong. A hero is trustworthy. Judge Taylor knew that Atticus was very trustworthy, that's why he got the case. Judge Taylor had faith that Atticus would respect the Constitution and give Tom Robinson a fair trial. This shows that Judge Taylor trusts Atticus when a man's life is in danger. This shows that Atticus has a tremendous amount of integrity. Integrity is necessary in the formula for creating a hero. Without it people wouldn't believe or trust you. This will ruin your spirit and make it harder to achieve goals. Atticus also shows integrity when he visits Tom Robinson's family after Tom Robinson's death. “They exited the highway, slowly passed the dump, and passed the Ewell residence, down the narrow alley to the Negro cabins.
