Facebook (originally known as Facebook) was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard student, in January 2004 as a way to contact other students attending the University of Harvard. After finishing the website, Zuckerberg told some friends about it, and one friend suggested he send it to the three hundred people on the Kirkland House online mailing list. In the following 24 hours, an estimated number of around 1,200-1,500 students "signed up to Facebook", a figure which in a month grew to more than half of the university university population. By March 2004, Facebook had expanded to students at Stanford, Columbia, and Yale, eventually expanding to all Ivy League and Boston-area schools and gradually reaching universities in Canada and the United States. After purchasing the facebook.com domain name in 2005 for $200,000, the company dropped the "The" from the name. In September 2005, Facebook launched a version for high schools that, at the time, required an invitation to join and was considered Zuckerberg's "logical next step."
