Through one perspective two different connected stories are told in the novel Middlesex. A vision can describe two stories that influence each other by describing a person's reason for living. Eugenides uses a first-person narrative from Cal, the main character, on two stories about his life. Cal begins his narrative about himself being Middlesex by transitioning into the narrative of his grandparents' lives fleeing Greece. The narrative of his grandparents' lives seems to some extent subjective. “Was it love or reproduction? Chance or destiny? Crime or nature at work?” (37). Cal seemed to slip into parts where he would question himself and seem less trustworthy, because the interrogation felt like he was wondering in hopes of getting an answer as to why they chose incest. In his description of the war Cal seemed more reliable in highlighting the direct facts. “He looked up and saw again how deserted the casino really was, and that sight made him realize that the stakes were high.
