Riparian areas are the areas surrounding rivers, streams, lakes, etc. The word “ripa” in Latin means shore. They are the transition zone between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Only recently have riparian areas been seen as important places, rather than as “sacrifice” areas that could be given up for livestock and crops. They occupy a small part of our land, but are vital to the ecosystems and water they surround. The roles of riparian areas are quite simple, but they are extremely important for vegetation, wildlife, water, and us. Riparian areas are the “intermediate” places between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It allows transport between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the distribution of nutrients, which helps balance surrounding ecosystems. Riparian areas are critical to stopping erosion, which can pose a major problem for farmers and surrounding areas.
