Drive a Car, Not a Cell Phone While driving a vehicle, cell phone use should be illegal. Not only is it dangerous for the driver, but it is also dangerous for other drivers on the road. Drivers on the road today experience many ailments that affect their driving abilities. Today it is necessary to take the necessary actions to limit the most serious damage caused by cell phone use while driving. (Word Count: 64) First, cell phone use while driving can distract the driver. Some might say that in today's society, most people need to stay in touch with others via cell phones. However, this need to be continuously informed about the social world is not a necessary quality to have while driving. RESPONDING TO THE OPPOSITION. Instead, drivers need to put down their phone and focus on the road. The US government reports that eighty percent of total car accidents are related to distracted driving (“Multitasking Leads to Distracted Driving”). This overwhelming number sends a big message: Driving needs to be taken more seriously. Even without using your cell phone, operating a vehicle can be difficult enough. Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation at the US Department of Transportation, said: “Distracted driving is a threat to society. And it seems like the situation is getting worse every year."
