The frequency of foreclosures in our nation today is dangerously high. The strain resulting from the recent economic crisis has put many families and individuals in a situation of financial suffocation preventing them from being able to make their monthly mortgage payments. As a result, many of these people feel they have punched a one-way ticket to foreclosure. With all these foreclosed homes, we are facing a very real crisis. The best way to solve this foreclosure crisis is to prevent homes from foreclosing one home at a time. The American family needs a simple option to save their home. My solution is based on the concept of the homeowner paying what they are capable of today, with a long-term solution that allows them to eventually pay off the entire debt. If the homeowner can now afford to make the payments, then they can escape foreclosure, rebuild their pride, and be a productive citizen. In essence, the problem leading to the foreclosure crisis is the recent decrease in people's ability to make loan payments due to job losses and lower wages caused by the weak economy. Rather than spending billions of dollars at big banks in the hope that they will find a way to help homeowners borrow, the government should address the problem through individuals. Simply, government aid spent in the hope of stimulating the economy should be channeled towards reducing home mortgage balances to make monthly payments affordable to the homeowner. By funneling government aid directly to the American homeowner in need, the economy would benefit greatly as homeowners would regain their balance with their budget because the economy and foreclosure are directly related. When one hurts, the other hurts too; when one prospers, the other does as we do… middle of paper… is not excluded from many other economic stimulus ideas) Using profits from future home sales, income tax refunds, 401K withdrawals and a part of the federal allocations, these loans have a very promising chance of being fully repaid. Thousands of hard-working American families are being dragged down the road to foreclosure with no escape in sight. Despite their hard work, they struggle to make mortgage payments, lose hope, lose pride in owning a home, and eventually abandon payments altogether. We need to revive hope and rebuild their sense of pride in owning their own home by helping them make payments through this plan. My solution does not require simple government giveaways, but rather enables the recapture of public investment. One home at a time, we can successfully rebuild the American dream of homeownership and end the foreclosure crisis.
