In William Shakespeare's "Macbeth", sleep is a very significant aspect of the play, represented by many references to it and by events that cause sleep deprivation. To emphasize the importance of rest Shakespeare uses varied poetic language and distortions of sleep. Sleep becomes a significant theme of the play when Macbeth, persuaded by Lady Macbeth, kills King Duncan while he sleeps in their home. As a result, Macbeth suffers from devastating nightmares and delusions which are the reason for his constant paranoia and anxiety leading to numerous murders. Shakespeare's choice of language shows that he values the ability to sleep, which in my opinion is influenced by his own experience. He considers it a “balm for wounded minds” which I interpret as a relaxing and comforting activity. Furthermore, the phrase “main course of great nature” refers to the time we spend sleeping and means that rest is a vital human need for our mind and body to function well. This choice of vocabulary makes the audience understand how important sleep is in a play and clearly depicts that Macbeth's anxiety is a consequence of sleep deprivation and his overwhelming ambition. The first important reference to sleep is the witches' revenge on the sailor's wife. The scene establishes the link between darkness, sleep and the supernatural. The witches plot to avenge the wife's insult. Their abilities are limited, as indicated by the words "Though his boat may not be lost, yet it will be tossed by the storm", so the way they curse the sailor is quite unusual as they control the elements and the weather to punish him for the his wife's discomfort. . According to the witches, the effects of sleep deprivation will follow anxiety… the medium of paper… destiny in production. Dramatic meaning is a very important aspect of the play. Shakespeare's beliefs and values are presented in this play along with morals. The understanding of sleep in 'Macbeth' is profound and shows its importance in life. Nowadays, sleep is not considered a particularly exciting activity in our lives; however, studies have shown that getting enough sleep is essential for our bodies to function and our minds to remain alert and rested. To summarize the events of 'Macbeth' I think E. Joseph Cossman's quote "The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night's sleep" works really well. - which is definitely the solution to Macbeth's problems, the cure for his constant paranoia and megalomania, and would hopefully help change the end result and lead to a happy ending.
