Topic > Teaching All Children About Food by Jamie Oliver - 1360

According to passionate chefs, America is at its "tipping point." (Oliver, 2010, para 8) In recent decades, food has taken a drastic step towards unknown ingredients and chemicals. Most of society would agree that children are the future, but startling statistics make this hard to believe; they cannot become the future if they are fed to death. Jamie Oliver and Ann Cooper are two of the many chefs who are working hard to educate people about real food. The lectures given by each of them convey the overall message that the future of humanity lies in the food we eat. Jamie Oliver's 2010 lecture, "Teach Every Child About Food," opens with the frightening truth that Americans are forcing upon themselves: “Food-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States.” It is said that Today's children will live ten years shorter than their parents because of the food they eat. Oliver goes on to share the statistic that in ten years this country will be spending approximately $300 billion per year on the costs of obesity. Information like this shows that money is being invested in all the wrong things. Ann Cooper's similar lecture, "What's Wrong with School Meals," given in 2007, takes a strong stand against the USDA and what they call food. Cooper suggests to listeners that the USDA does not have their best interests at heart; claiming an issue of social injustice among them. In 2014, the USDA has approximately $146 billion to allocate to programs such as nutrition assistance, agricultural products, food security and many others. Considering the statistics provided by Oliver, approximately less than half of the money spent on the costs of obesity is spent on food… half of the paper… intended for nutritious foods that do not give bodies a requirement for dietary aids. The money spent on fast food must be given to schools to produce real food for children. Overall, society should teach each other how to cook, teach each other the importance of food, and save humanity. The longer it takes for society to realize its mistakes, the worse the situation will become. Every day more and more children cast a bigger shadow on their lifespan without the knowledge that they can improve it. All in all, society needs to come together before it's too late.
