There are many different types of careers in the field of cosmetology. The different types are; hairdresser, perm or hair color specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber or beautician. Anyone can specialize in one, several, or all of these careers. No matter how many they specialize in, they will still be considered a cosmetologist. To obtain a specialization in cosmetology, you must take a course in the career that interests you. A typical cosmetology training program typically lasts nine months to about a year. Students receive instruction in hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair color, manicures and pedicures, chemical texturing services, acrylic nail application, massage, facials and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to broaden their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies on scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, fundamentals of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and practices safe working conditions. Once the course has been completed, including the hours of service, the person will have to take and pass a state exam relating to the course. Once the exam is passed, the person receives the certificate. A cosmetologist has many tasks to perform during his day. They do everything from shampooing, coloring, cutting or styling your hair. They can also do waxing, apply makeup, care for wigs, and even take care of your nails and skin. Hair styling includes straightening, curling, perming, waving, braids, updos, and hair for special events, such as proms or weddings. They use many different tools and for a variety of things. They must learn how to use all these tools during their training period. These tools include scissors… paper medium… dressers! Many cosmetologists have the opportunity to attend trade shows and seminars to stay updated on new developments in the beauty industry. The job market for cosmetologists is one of the best job markets in the job industry. In 2008 the average hourly wage was close to $13. In the same year the average annual salary was approximately $26,600. Salaries vary depending on location and type of employment in this field. The highest earning workers in this field were paid more than $20 an hour. On the other hand, workers at the lowest end of the industry earned less than $7.50 an hour. Cosmetologists in the film and video industry got the most out of both groups. These workers earned, on average, $29.50 an hour. The highest wages were in the states of Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts and New Jersey. The average earnings in these states together amounted to more than $15 an hour.
